Sir Francis Drake statue, Plymouth, UK. ⁣ 🖼️⁣🌆🌁📨❤️ ⁣ Some say privateer while some say pirate. Born in the 1540s in Tavistock, #Devon, UK, Francis Drake was one of the most famous Englishmen of his day. He was the the first Englishman to see the #Pacific #Ocean and sailed down the coast of South #America and up the other side all the way to #California. Drake and the crew of the Pelican (later renamed the Golden Hind) were only the second group to sail around the world, raiding Spanish treasure ships and ports, becoming incredibly wealthy before being knighted by Queen Elizabeth I. Known by the Spanish as "El Draque" (the Dragon), he then was promoted to vice-admiral and subsequently defeated the Spanish Armada, which at the time was the largest navy the world had seen. He went back to "legally" plundering for queen and country before dying of dysentery while on an expedition to the New World on January 27, 1596. This #statue is on #Plymouth #Hoe, UK. This site was said to be where he played bowls while waiting for the tide to change before he sailed to fight the armarda. Mussels clinging to a rock, Treyarnon Bay, Cornwall. ⁣ 🖼️⁣🌆🌁📨❤️ ⁣ Treyarnon bay is a beautiful part of the world, on a headland in #Cornwall, jutting into the Atlantic. I used to come #surfing here as a kid with my family and then as I got older with my friends from school. It holds a special place in my heart - full of memories of #swimming on those #sunny days, #sunbathing under clear #blueskies and spending beautiful evenings with a #BBQ and a few beers on the #beach under the #milkyway. Carraig Phádraig, Ireland ⁣ 🖼️⁣🌆🌁📨❤️ ⁣ The Rock of Cashel, County #Tipperary, is the ancient seat of the King's of #Munster, famously Brian Mac Cennétig or Brian Boru, who was crowned High King in 990, Boru was the only king who was able to unite all of #Ireland under one ruler for any significant period of time. He died defeating the Norsemen in the #battle of Clontarf in 1014. Cashel was donated to the church 1101, becoming a #cathedral but is now a tourist attraction. My first trip to #Cashel, I was impressed by the scale of the site. Most 'castles' in Ireland are actually fortified watchtowers, so to see such a massive ancient structure was very intriguing. It actually made me realise that I knew very little about Irish #history, so I've started reading lots.
